Cannot get XP to install

I have installed a new hard drive on my computer and have
tried to install XP Pro SP1 over and over and cannot get
it to install. Or it did one time was did not run right.
I have a homemade computer Athlon 1200, Abit KT7-Raid
motherboard. I installed this on this same computer a
little over a year ago, but I cannot get it installed on
this new hard drive. I am doing a clean install and
installing smartdrv and running it from cd-rom from the
i386 file with winnt command. It goes about 15% on
installing the files and it says cannot read file and it
may be the same file or another. I have taken everything
out except the video card, cd rom and 1 stick of ram. I
have tried 3 different cd roms and 6 different sticks of
ram and I cannot get it installed. Please I need Help!!!!

It look's like you may have Windows XP CD disk problem. Try cleaning your
Windows XP CD disk. See if it has a broad scratch on the top or bottom of
the CD.

If so, maybe that is the problem because the laser beam is not reading at
that sector/location.

Does your disk manufacturer provide an app that you can boot your pc from
(eg a floppy downloaded from the internet) that will test the new disk.

I don't think it that is the problem. I made a backup copy
to protect my original one, but I have tried both and have
the same results. I cannot see any scratches on the disk
at all. I am about at my wits end. I have been trying
for over 2 weeks to get this installed. I have searched
and read of many others with the same problem of "Cannot
copy the file bla bla.

And what can I do if my cd is bad?
