Cannot get to slave drive

I have two western digital 40gb harddrives. The bios is
set to auto and it recognizes both hard drives. The
jumpers are set correctly on the drives for master and
primary.

In disk management the master is reporting to be be Disk
0 and it is partitioned as c: and d: respectively. Layout
= partition, type = basic, File system = NTFS, Status for
c: = healthy (system), and status for d: = healthy.

The slave is reading as disk 1. there is no volume name
or letter and right clicking on it in the list or
clicking on it's window only gives the option to delete
the partition. I do not want to do this because
this "slave drive" now was actually the original master
before I bought the second hd. So, both harddrives have
XP operating system on them, and what I am trying to do
is move all my data files and programs from the old to
new. If I set the jumpers to have the old drive as the
master I do not get the same problem. I am able to
access the new drive. The reason I am trying to transfer
between the drives is to start with fresh os. I'm having
to many problems with junk programs on the old one.

Any suggestions? I've read through the threads and the
ones that relate to the problems I have don't seem to
have replies.

Same thing (just about) here. Old HDD on old Gateway
Essentials 450 MHz, upgraded to 80 GB WDD HDD. The Floppy
DD (WDD Boot "Transfer" Floppy Disk), as I recall, didn't
recognize floppy format, when booted... "Do you wish to
format now?"...NO. Format to me means, ERASE. Anyway,FAT
32 on old, and FAT32 on New. Went to XP Home on new, and
now can switch boot sequence through BIOS, but on old HDD
it recognizes 'both' HDD's (still WIN 98), but on New, it
only sees the new HDD (it's there in BIOS, and looks
correct....jumpers, cables, Master, SLave, etc.). I can
'switch' BIOS boot sequence, but will everything Recover????

BTW: This is coming from the PC in question, booted to XP
on New HDD, but cannot access Old Files on Old HDD.

Please Help, ...someone, ...anyone???? I just need the
'old' data files, and could then throw this old 10 GB? HDD
in the trash.

THANKS!
