cannot get error-checking feature to work

Hi,

I cannot get the error-checking feature to work on my
windows XP Professional operating system. When the
computer restarts to activate the feature, it only gets
about half way through step one and then tries to restart
again. I have to disable it to get the computer to
start. I have tried it several times but no luck. I
have an XP Home system that works fine. But no-go with
the XP Pro. system. Any help will be much appreciated.
P.S. I have already tried disableing everything so no
programs will try to start when I restart the computer.
