Chuck Billow

I am trying to add an entry to the registry, but am denied access.

I tried running regedit as Admin, no good.

I tried logging in as Admin, no good.

How can I fix this? Help?!

Rick:

I set myself as the owner for all the hives, and they show that way, with
full control.

This machine came pre-configured with Vista Home Premium, and I went back to
the factory settings, but still had the issue, so I've GOT to be doing
something wrong, but God knows what.

Rick:

I was able to fix it, although I'm not totally clear how.

I saw a post on another site about the need to be a "Trusted Installer" for
teh registry to allow the change.

I poked around a bit with that group, but couldn't really see any change
that I coulld make.

However, when I then tried again to edit the "Shell" entry, it "let me in".
So I went back to the registry entry it hadn't been allowing me to make, and
this time it worked!

Go figger!

Rick:

Now I truly don't understand:

I found a post on the net by a MS (labeled) person -- no I don't remember
who -- that said you had to be a member of the Trusted Installers to modify
"Shell".

That sounded reasonable, so I right-clicked the TI group, Permissions, and
added my self with Full COntrol.

So far, so good.

Then I double-clicked the following reg entry -- and it seemed to merge OK.

----------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\OpenSCinIE_with_BAT]
@="Open in &IE"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut\shell\OpenSCinIE_with_BAT\command]
@="\"c:\\winapps\\comm\\internet\\utils\\openSCinIE\\OpenSCinIE.bat\" \"%1\""
-------------

But nothing shows in the Context menu fro Net links on the desktop.

So now what the heck am I missing?

Hi,

What are you attempting to accomplish with the modification?

Have you logged off/on since making the change?

Hi Chuck,

Right click the target key where the changes are to be made, you will
need
to alter permissions on it.

Rick:

I want to be able to select the browser for any given link by right-clicking
and having the "Open in..." there to select from.

Why wouldn't the entry show up in the context menu at all?

Hi,

I'm not sure why the context entry doesn't show. First reboot and see if the
change holds.
