Cannot download program with IE6

J

Julie P.

Hi, I'm having a bizarre problem with IE6 on Windows XP Home. I am trying to
go to this page to download a reputable program:

http://download.endicia.com/setupV4.exe

and I keep getting a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error no matter what I do,
including clearing cache and cookies and restarting.

With Netscape 7.1 I have no problem and can download the program (although I
cannot open the download from the webpage, but rather have to save it to
disk first, since Netscape does not know what application to use). But this
still irritates me that I cannot do it with IE6 even though everyone else I
have spoken to can. I want to fix this IE problem.

I suspect the problem is with the Google Toolbar pop-up blocker or my IE
security settings (set to Default/Medium). Or maybe Spyware Blaster or
SpyBot or Win-Patrol? I don't have a firewall.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Julie

Make sure you are not accessing the URL from your
favorites or bookmark, and also make sure "check for newer
versions of sotred pages" is set to "Every visit to the
page".

That link worked for me. I have Google toolbar with Pop-up blocker enabled
in IE6 SP-1, so you can rule that out. Same for SpywareBlaster and Spybot
S&D, so rule those out. My security settings are at medium, and I don't
allow Active Scripting or ActiveX, so rule that out too. Don't have
WinPatrol, but do have a firewall (as should you).

I also noticed that Alan Edwards (MS MVP W95/98 Systems) had posted to
someone who had a *somewhat* similar problem. I will paste his reply below
(Thanks Alan).

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

The above suggestion was in reply to this query:
Whenever I go to download a file in IE6, the machine does
absolutely nothing...I click the link and downloads just
don't work. It sometimes gives me a page with the three
colored shapes in the top left corner but thats it. Please
help!
