cannot download newsgroups...help!

i've been trying to download newsgroups forever it seems like and cannot seem to get anything to work right...i keep getting THIS popup..

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC1

i'm SO new to this and would be SO grateful if someone could help me out...

That's an email failure message, nothing to do with newsgroups.
Exactly how are you trying to download newsgroups?
