Cannot download anything

Colleen

I am sending this to several newsgroups, because I am not sure which is the
most appropriate one. I apologize for the multiple postings.

I am trying to download security updates for Windows 2000 Professional, and
I am unable to get the downloads to work. In fact, I am unable to download
any
updates for any of my applications.

Because of multiple past security problems with Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express, I have had to equip my system with the following security
applications:
ZoneAlarm
Spybot Search and Destroy
Secretmaker
AdAware

When I posted something about this earlier, it was suggested that I shut
down
ZoneAlarm. I did that, and it did not help.

Help!!!

Thank you.

Some idle thoughts that might help:

Be sure you are using Internet Explorer. Consider upgrading it to Version 6
if necessary. Have cookies turned on; you can delete them later.

I am not familiar with SecretMaker. Could you also shut it down?

*** When you got to Windows Update, exactly what happens? ***

Consider Sygate Personal Firewall (free) instead of ZoneAlarm. I have no
problems with it; I had plenty with various versions of ZoneAlarm. Others
may disagree, but this works for me.

Painfully, if malware is preventing your using Windows Update, you may have
to rebuild your system. Hold this as a last resort.

Hi Colleen

I helped a friend of mine recently with something like this.
After removing lots of virus's and hijack stuff we still could not get
things to go.

The issue was solved in a couple of steps.

1. Go to the Adaware site and look for add-ons.
Fetch the LSP tool install and run it.

We found DOTNET entries that some hijack program had placed there.
And that were still lying around.

Remove them.....warning picking the wrong thing would be bad, if you are
unsure
ask around first!

2. Re-install IE

Hope it helps.
