Cannot do system restore

I have XP Pro with service pack 2. After installing it I noticed that some
of my icons were missing and there were some weird things going on. So I
decided to uninstall service pack 2 to see if that was the problem.
Uninstalled it but still had the problems. Decided that it wasn't service
pack 2 then. So then I tried to do a system restore but it said unable to.
I selected a different restore date and still no luck. I tried like 5
different dates but still. Help me, thanks. Why can't I do a system restore
now?
