Cannot disable add new hardware wizard

Well start by saying microsoft sucks. The problem I have been having
with the add new hardware wizard has been around for at least 4 years,
and has involved multiple version of windows and thousands of users
judging from the many results I've found doing internet searches to fix
this problem. Yet after all these years they couldn't be bothered to
add a way to disable their unnessarily big-brother handholding
worthless crap "feature."

Neither of the two "solutions" or "workarounds" on microsoft's website
worked.

Trying to install the driver did not work. The driver files MS wants
are not on the printer install CD.

Going to into the services feature and changing plug and play from
automatic to disabled did work, but it also disabled my sound card.

I could not disable plus and play by uninstalling it as a windows
component because it was not listed as a component.

Completely unstalling the printer and using the wizard to install it
does not work because the wizard fails to install it every time.

I guess I just need to buy an apple. If there is a way to fix this
short of this please advise.

I had a similar problem not too long ago. It was the most frustrating thing.
Although the 'Add New Hardware' wizard started every time I blinked and the
device listed was definitely my printer, a Lexmark, what showed up in
Device manager was unknown device, unknown driver, unknown...blah, blah
blah.
After screwing around with pretty much all the same things you have listed,
I finally got it solved. First, let me explain that although I had the
option to have the New Hardware wizard not alert me of this new device, I
chose not to do that because it was important for me to figure out the cause
and not just slap a Band-Aid on it. Besides, the yellow exclamation mark in
device manager was NOT acceptable.
So, with my printer and all the drivers installed, I put the install cd in,
started it, and after it started to install, a screen came up saying that
the drivers were already installed but update was recommended, to update,
press continue. I had to follow this procedure several times, and finally
what it turned out to be was the ELUA had not, for some reason, registered
correctly, because after about the 4th or 5th time doing that, the 'I
accept' screen came up, and after clicking that, the drivers installed, and
since then, I've had no trouble.
I should mention that I disabled my virus protection and firewall before I
did this, just to make sure there was nothing standing in the way of the
install.
Also, I was , on every occasion, able to delete the 'unknown device' from
device manager, but upon every reboot, it was back, as well as the new
hardware wizard.

I can understand the install/setup program simply refusing to
start if you don't "accept" their EULA, but once accepted,
this is the first time I've heard of software /not/ installing
itself correctly for that reason alone. /Lots/ of reasons why
installs don't work, often requiring automatic or manual
uninstalls, registry hacks, etc., but never a EULA issue.

EULAs are interesting animals to me. It's like buying a new
car and having to agree not to let anyone else drive it before
/you/ are allowed to start the engine and drive home.

But, that's a discussion best left for another time...

Stranger things, and all, I know. I should, however, clarify that while
doing this final procedure, I closed the 'Add New Hardware' wizard when it
opened, not allowing it to run. The 'device' listed when the Add New
Hardware wizard /did/ run was, lxbu_device.

Sounds like an Arte Johnson "very interesting, but stupid" to
me! Not you, of course, but either Windoze or your hardware
manufacturer.

My problems with hardware always stem from Windoze insisting
on installing its own driver before it will let me install the
manufacturers driver. Even then, I have trouble, and I have
trouble with things like my scanner's SCCI card conflicting
with my sound card, requiring me to remove the sound card
driver and let Windoze "recognize" it again.

But, then, what install system does an 800 pound gorilla use?
Anyone they want! Glad you got your peculiar problem fixed!

When I go to my device manager, my printer is there, no yellow or red
flag on it, and it says the device is working properly.

I did not see this option anywhere on the add new hardware dialogue.

I'd be happy with a bandaid myself. I am tired of spending 45 seconds
every startup killing the new hardware wizard.

The printer is a HP laserjet.

Okay, let the new hardware wizard run, then, when you get to the point where
it asks you if you want the wizard to look for the driver/device, or if you
want to do it manually, pick manually.
Now, okay it's been a while since I had to do this, so bear with me, I might
miss a step or two, but when you are on that page, it should indicate what
device is initiating the Add New Hardware wizard. If it does, continue the
process and choose your device from the options listed, and complete the
install. If not, or if you get the looking for new hardware, and you are
asked if the device has been installed or not, go back and let the wizard
search for you. When it ends that process, you might be given the choice of
'do not ask to install this again'

However, if you have your HP disk, try this method. Put the cd in, and
without uninstalling your printer software, try installing over your present
application.

Very much like that, lol.

True, so true. ;)

I don't think Apple is going to like you any more than a WinTel machine
does.

Or follow the docs exactly for your printer install.

I think this problem is related....I've installed the software for a wireless
keyboard and optical mouse on the laptop. Device managers says the devices
are working properly. Says the drivers are installed. Even says the device is
plugged into the keyboard port (PS/2). But neither of the devices work. The
add new hardware doofus tells me that another device is trying to install and
to wait until it is finished. It's a liar. Nothing else is trying to
install......HELLPPPPPPP.
