Cannot delete selected text with del key without confirming

Please help

I am using Word 2003 at work. Since today, when I select text with the mouse, then try to delete it with the Del key, the following message appears in the bottom left corner of the screen: - "Delete Block? No (Yes)"

By hitting "Y" the selection is deleted, otherwise it doesn't happen. I am still able to "cut" or "clear" the highlighted text using the edit menu.

I cannot find reference to this 'confirm dialogue' issue in the Help or in several Word 2003 books. Even the departmental secreatary, who knows most things about Word, is stumped.

Please tell me I am not missing something glaringly obvious...

Thank you,

Nick
