Cannot delete email after accessing newsgroups

System: Win98SE, Outlook express

Outlook Express has developed an interesting glitch here. At bootup, everything works fine for both email and newsgroups

However, as soon as I've checked newsgroups then go back to email, I've lost the ability to delete any mail items (inbox, outbox, sent item). I've tried 3 methods of deleting, the red "X" on the tool bar, dragging to the deleted items folder and Edit/Delete on the drop down menus

Closing and reopening OE doesn't help, it takes a full reboot. I've also reinstalled software to no avail and a virus check with definitions dated as recently as Friday shows no infection

Any thoughts

Apologies...Sunday morning drowsiness caused me to post this in the wrong place...I've resubmitted under Outlook express..
