Cannot copy registry files

Can you describe exactly what files you are copying and
how, and the exact error you get when you try?

For example the problem occurs if I try to copy
C:\Windows\system32\config\SYSTEM

In Windows Explorer I simply right-click on it > Copy.
Then at the destination folder I right-click > Paste.

Then an error popup flashes for a brief moment and disappears before I can
read it. That's also weird because usually you must OK an error box to close
it.
