Cannot Connect to device from VS.NET

I cannot connect to the device from VS.NET to deploy (or debug)

I tried to:
reregistering ProxyPorts.reg
install the "Windows CE .NET Utilities v1.1 for Visual Studio .NET 2003.EXE"
softresets

All in vain!

Any help?

What device is it? Has this worked for you in the past? Which
version of activesync do you have?
