Cannot change Virtual Memory Size

Short version: I cannot seem to set VM size and Hibernate gets disabled.

Longer version: I added memory to a laptop running XP SP2 to go from 1GB to
1.5GB (don't ask why not 2G, long story). Laptop was sluggish, rememberred
VM, went in to change it. It will not change. I type in the new numbers
(2300/3400) hit SET, OK, etc and nothing happens, VM size stys at 1518.
Probably not related to Norton (we are running Symantec 9.0 and it never
changes, rather than reverting at powerup). As probably a related issue, I
can hibernate sometimes (first time after a boot) but eventually get a
"Insufficient Resources" and Hibernate disappears from the shutdown menu.
Not surprising since RAM and VM sizes are identical

why not set the virtual memory to SYSTEM MANAGED.

Sorry, should have mentioned that. I tried "System Managed" and it stays at
1518 (which is below the 1.5xRAM limit)

That so-called 1.5 x RAM limit for the virtual memory paging file in
Windows XP is pure unadulterated horse manure and the persons who
originated this lie should be tarred, feathered, and ridden out of
town on a rail.

The actual truth is that virtual memory paging file requirement is
*inversely* related to the amount of RAM that you have in the
computer. More RAM means less paging file and less RAM means more
paging file provided all other factors remain constant.

For accurate information on memory management in Windows XP see the
article by the late Alex Nichol MVP at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

As for your problem with the value not sticking, do you perhaps have
the paging file on a FAT32 drive? That might be relevant, as I have
heard numerous reports of people having issues with files larger than
2 gb on FAT32 drives, even though the theoretical maximum is 4 gb.

Good luck

might check the MS knowledge base to see if they have any suggestions.
just ask something like
cannot change page file size
