cannot change lan settings

In the local area connections box the properties are all greyed out. What
might be preventing me from changing these settings. please?

It comes about because my Dell laptop is not seeing or being seen by other
LAN computers, but it accesses the internet just fine.

I am running CA antivirus and Pestpatrol anti spyware. Thanks
