Cannot change directories?

I can open MS Word fine, but when I try to access a file in a directory other
than that shown, the program freezes. It will only save to the directory
that it last used when opening a file. All of the office updates have been
installed. I can use Windows explorer to find files easily.

When Word freezes, that's usually a sign of corrupted registry entries or
normal.dot. Take a look here to see if the steps described (which cover much
more than Word simply not opening) resolve your issue:
