Cannot alphabetize contacts within Categories in Outlook 2003 Cont

Gary

I apologize if the subject of this seemed very confusing. Here's the
situation:

I'm using Outlook 2003 with an Exchange Server. I have my Contacts set up
to be displayed (sorted?) by Category. For example, let's say I have three
Categories: coworkers, friends, and family. I can get those categories to
display in alphabetical order. The problem I'm having is that the Contacts
within those categories will NOT alphabetize. For instance....

Friends (category)

John Smith
Gayle Anderson
David Thompson
Steve Bollero

I can't figure out how to get the names above to alphabetize (last name,
first name) within the Category (in this case "friends"). I'd appreciate it
if anyone would please shed some light on this matter or offer any
assistance. The one thing I've tried doing is moving the column "File As" to
the left to alphabetize them, but it didn't seem to work. Thank you.

You cannot sort by categories, only group by them. If you have a contact in
the "Friends" category and the "CoWorkers" category (assuming any of your
friends are also co-workers), the contact will show in both groups.
For example, let's say I have three

What is your File As setting? I find that if I first sort the table view by
File As (which is, as far as I can tell, the default for most table views),
then group by the category, the items within the category groups are
alphabetized.
