Cannot add contacts - Add-in does not install

Hi:

I use the Mapilab Add-in Contact for Outlook. However, with Outlook 2007 on
a Vista machine, the add-in does not install. After installing the add-in and
running Outlook, the program crashes and disables the add-in. The error
message is below. The company does not have an answer. Has anyone on the
messageboard encountered this, or have a solution?

Alternatively, is there another way to add contacts automatically? I saw
reference to a .dll solution, but it was not clear to me where I should
install the dll (it simply said to put it in the target directory...).

If Mapilab doesn't have the answer, it's not likely anyone else will. It's
their program and I'm assuming you purchased it if you're using it. I would
imagine they'd support their own paid customers.

Not familiar with the MapiLab product but from a support standpoint - some
of the first things that we'd be asking about/checking are:

1) "what other addins are installed" and go from there (note: the answer to
that question is generally meaningless to anyone other than the product
vendor since they would be the ones to be able to track any patterns with
their product - ergo: responding with a list of addins would be of no value
unless someone else reading this thread has experienced the same problem -
in which case, MapiLab would most likely be aware of the cause in any case)
2) are all other existing addins (if any) known to specifically work with
O'2007?
3) does the problem occur on any other machine that do not have the same
addins installed? (just to exclude any kind of config issue on a single
machine)

The "way" you mentioned MapiLabs response alludes to no questions being
asked prior to stating that they didn't have an answer. While I don't know
the MapiLab folks directly, do know "of them" and somehow would be surprised
if that was the case. If they did ask questions resulting in "no answer" -
would be really helpful to identify what exactly was asked/suggested.

As for the last part of your question re: "reference to a DLL solution" -
there is usually an install process to incorporate an addin. DLL's don't
automatically get invoked unless put into a very specific location which
would be a very strange way to release any kind of program. In short -
sounds like there is a bunch of info missing on whatever this DLL is that
you are referring to.

Thanks for your posts. The reference to the tip I found for automatically

Mapilab Add Contacts worked well with my office machine and on my home
desktop, but both run XP and Outlook 2003. My laptop is Vista and Outlook
2007. Info on the product is at http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/add_contacts

I did not want to give the long history/details of working with Mapilab in
the post. Mapilab has tried to address the issue and have worked hard, but
all proposed solutions have not worked. This is why I posted on the message
board, to see if others had ideas, had come across this, etc.

I have disabled all add-ins except for the Dragon Naturally Speaking Add-in,
the Outlook Backup add-in, and the Windows Search email add-in.

Completely sympathize with both you and the folks at MapiLab. Can only tell
you what we would be saying in a similar scenario where everything suggested
didn't isolate the issue which is to start with a clean system. It's the
only way to definitively preclude anything else interfering. We have run
across a number of situations where there was something on a system that was
causing no end of grief only to find that on a clean machine - everything
worked exactly as advertised. Simply disabling addins does not necessarily
mean that there isn't something on the system causing an issue. However, as
long as you have not disabled (preferably uninstalled versus just being
disabled) ALL addins (if no clean machine is available) and then build
things back up one at a time - no way of knowing for sure what's causing the
problem. This of course assumes that MapiLab has other clients with their
product installed and working correctly on Vista systems with no issues.

Just because one product may work on your system doesn't mean that it's not
mis-behaving in some way causing problems for other programs. Or to put that
another way, just because one product "doesn't work" - does not mean that it
is the one causing/having the problem (other than not being able to run
properly) which is the typical reaction and assumption when a problem
occurs. Over the years we have run into isolated cases where a specific
version of a "name-brand" product caused our products to fail only to have
the issue suddenly and completely resolved when "they" (not us) issued an
update. You only need to read some of the potential problems that occurred
with Apple's iTunes addin (which I understand has now been resolved with a
recent update).

In short - the possibility exists that the problem you're encountering may
have nothing at all to do with the MapiLab product itself contrary to what
it "looks like".

Karl,

Yes, the newest version of the ITunes addin does fix their problems and now
innocent bystander addins wouldn't get blamed for any ITunes addin problems.

To agree with what you said, I've seen similar things with other addins
also. The Skype addin was causing problems for other code but the developer
fixed that after I discussed things with him. That's not the only example,
there are many others around like that.

Thanks for the replies. Hard to say what the conflict might be. I have
encountered this problem after two reformats of my hard drive (one a few
weeks ago). Mapilab just told me they have run all the tests they could and
can't diagnose the problem, so they will refund me. They have been very good
and responsive.
