cannot access the undo option in editing, how did it get turned o.

I have always been able to use the undo option in word but it somehow got
turned off. What did I do to disable it and how can I turn it back on?
 
The only actions I know of that clear the Undo stack are closing the
document and protecting/unprotecting a form.
