Cannot access share (error 5)

Guest

I just replaced a computer on my home network with a brand new one, and can't
seem to get rid of the \\computer name\share name is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this resource...error. I set the new
computer up identical to the one it replaced: profiles, passwords, etc., but
I can only access files residing on the laptop (from the desktop), and not
vice/versa. Ran Network setup wizard on both machines (connect to internet
through a wireless router, desktop connected directly to router, laptop
connects wirelessly), and both systems show up in netwok neighborhood on each
computer. I can access the laptop shares through the desktop & get the error
5 when trying to access desktop shares from the Laptop. Both computers have
all applicable services running, NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled, and
Restrictanonymous registry settings for both are set to 0. I can ping each
machine, the router, and local hosts from each machine. I am also running
Norton Internet Security 2006 on both machines with the firewall enabled for
my home network. Have tried disabling NIS on both machines with no effect.
I have read every post on this newsgroup and tried everything to no avail.
Below are the results of Ipconfig, net view, browstat & ping for each
machine. I'm about at the end of my rope...It is probably something simple,
but I can't find it. Please help!

Sorry about the length of this message, but wanted to get all pertinent data
out there at once.

I have same problem but no NVIDIA... I posted almost same message as snafu42
on another thread:

I was hoping at end of this thread i would find solution to exactly same
problem I've ben experiencing.... I have done everything... disabled both
WFand Mfee FW... upgrade the problem desktop to win pro, edited registry
entry restrictanonymous to 0, renamed computers, renamed workgroup... at end
of my pacience.... this problem just appeared, and i cant fix it... help.

current state is:
Dlink router - general open, but restricted to mac addresses of 3 computers
on my network (yes they are corect) - 1 desktop ethernet wired, 1 home laptop
wireless, 1 work laptop wireless

Desktop A can see and connect to shared folders of Laptop B and itself.
Laptop B can see both itself and Desktop B, but does not show desktop A
shared folders in network places, or when tryingto connect to desktop B, gets
cannot access network resource, you may not have permisssion.
Laptop C can see both laptob B and desktop A but can only connect to laptop B.
I can access internet from all computers with no problem.

Problem computer seems to be desktop A, but I have tried everything... Help.

Thanks,
Bez.

Bez,

You have the same symptom as Snafu. But the symptom has multiple causes. Only
with diagnostic work is the problem sometimes found.

You can fumble around, or you can work on the problem. But please respond in
your thread, not in others.

Sorry Chuck/Snafu.... first time I'm using this kind of help... goes to show
how frustrating this one is.... I'm 20 years in IT management and always have
figured problems out with myself, study, and personal connections, but not
this one.... IT professionals who have physically looked at my set up are
stumped..

I will leave this thread and continue on the other one, or if that one is
confusing things too, I'll start a fresh one.

Sorry again, and thanks for trying to help.
Bez.

Chuck;

Thanks for the nudge. Yes the nVidia NIC did have a hidden firewall: I
re-load the OS & installed the drivers but not the utility! Anyway, got the
utilities installed & tried creating a firewall profile for MS file sharing
(with the wizard) but still nothing. I then went ahead & turned off the
nVidia fireall completely (via the software utility), rebooted & still have
the same exact symptoms. Something interesting though; when I view workgroup
computers in network neighborhood from the desktop, & click on the desktop
computer and try to open the shared folders drive, I get the same error! I
can still see both computers and their shares from network neighborhood, can
access the Laptop's files from the Desktop, but still nothing the other
direction. Any other ideas?

What Operating System (name, version, edition, SP level) does each computer run?
If XP Pro, is Simple File Sharing enabled, or if Advanced File Sharing, are you
using Guest authentication? What specific shares are you trying to open?

If you are trying to disable NIS, note that is not known for success.

Thanks for the help, Chuck. Actually, I resolved the issue. After hours
pouring over your site, I isolated it to an IRPStack edit in the registry.
Home networking is working fine now from each machine. Thanks for all the
help.

Well, thanks for the update, but why did that take hours? If this was an
IRPStack error, did the message say
"Not enough server storage is available to process this command...access
denied"?

Every diagnosis page that I have should contain a link to

Or have I overlooked a critical detail?
