Cannot access folders

I re-installed xp pro onto a partition of my c: drive
when it used to reside on my D: drive (Different physical
drive). All my documents are left in a folder on D: that
replies "Access is denied". Please how do I unlock this
folder so I can retrieve very important documents?

Any help is much appreciated.
