When I insert dates into a footnote, it shows the current date. I want to
keep this date when I return to the document later and reprint it. How do I
turn off the auto update? (On the date format screen, the check box to auto
update is NOT checked).

Don't use a date field in the footnote. Instead, type the date you want
to appear in the footnote.

Actually type the date.
