Can you unconfuse Me?

Dear group: Here are some questions that I'm sure everyone wants answered.
Your replies are appreciated and welcomed.

1. What is the difference between Vista capable and Vista ready?
2. Is validation/licensing going to be a major headacche especially if the
DVD is installed on more than one machine?
3. When will hardware and software with the Vista design logo be available?
4. When will manufacturers develop Vista compatible drivers?
5. How long will you wait until you purchase Vista either separate or
preinstalled?

Tough questions?

Thanks.

Yup, it will be tough to spread the wealth. For that, you might want to try
a "cracked" version of Vista such as Vista BillGates available from the
better hacker sites.

The Vista logo isn't easy nor sleasy .. it's never "available" .. it must be
earned.

They are developing them both now and forevermore (or at least for the next
ten years God willing) ..

That's up to you. January2007 it will be available on retail shelves. End
of Novemeber 2006 will be available pre-installed on business PCs. It is
either already available now or will be within a few days if you buy one of
thoses subscriptions from Microsoft such as an MSDN Professional
Subscription.

Depends on one's point of view.

You're welcome.

1. What is the difference between Vista capable and Vista ready?
Capable means your computer can run Windows Vista, but it might not be able
to achieve the full experience of a Vista Premium Ready PC. Factos include,
Windows Aero Glass, 3D Gaming performance and other effects. Vista Premium
Ready, means it does all the above.
2. Is validation/licensing going to be a major headacche especially if the
DVD is installed on more than one machine?
Unless you install an already used license on another PC, yes, you will have
problems.
3. When will hardware and software with the Vista design logo be available?
They are available now, have been since March of this year. Just look for
the Windows Vista Capable or Premium Ready logo.
4. When will manufacturers develop Vista compatible drivers?
Some say, when Windows Vista is released to manufacturering which happened
last week. Some started a few months ago, it really depends. Its best you
contact them about support if you have a particular device thats not
compatible with Windows Vista.
5. How long will you wait until you purchase Vista either separate or
preinstalled?
I will purchase it after I upgrade my video card (currently a Geforce FX
5200 128 MB AGP 8X) and buy 1 GB stick of RAM.
My WEI score is 2.0

Graphics: Desktop performance for Windows Aero - 2.0
Gaming graphics: 3D business and gaming graphics performance 2.5

nVidia Geforce FX 5200 128 MB AGP
Aero was disabled by default, but still available for me to enable manually.

A quick answer to #2, validation and licensing will not be a problem if you
read and follow the EULA. However, it seems that you are implying that you
will be installing a single license on multiple machines, which naturally
will cause problems. You can transfer your license all you want now, but
multiple machines is a no-go.

It is too early to say with certaintly that WGA or SPP will shoot you out of
the sky if you install it on two machines, but in theory it should.

#5, I might wait as long as for the beta version of Vista to expire before
buying a final copy. I'm actually thinking about getting a new computer next
summer or fall.

Vista Capable will run Vista. Vista ready (usually talking about full
computers) are good to go out the box. Most new computers are already capable
and ready. I just bought an HP Pavilion a1630n, and it took Vista and ran it
fine, even had Aero glass. So they aren't that expensive. Mine, with a 17"
flat screen and printer, costed $901.00 (after taxes).

Activation is a click of the mouse. Or, if you don't have internet
connection, a phone call away. The only issues you may have is after
re-activating 10 times, or if you try to put the same license on more than
one computer at the same time.

Most of your major gear, sound cards and video cards, are already Vista
compatible, whether they are covered under the manufacturers drivers, like
nVidia, or under generic drivers, like my Realtek HD onboard Audio. In fact,
the only devices on my computer that Vista didn't have a driver for, and that
I still can't find a Vista driver for are my HP USB PVR (which I was able to
load via the "update driver command in device manager, using the HP Driver
source), the lightscribe for my DVDDL +/- RW, and a funky unknown device,
that Vista doesn't know what it is. But neither do I, and it is not effecting
how my computer is running

Hardware manufacturers are already releasing Vista drivers, most will have
them ready to go, most likely no later than Market Release. (Note some
extremely old equipment may not find support, but that will most likely be
for gear that is so out of date, that it is hard to find XP drivers. (Throw
that 14,400 modem away!)
Most software that runs in XP runs well with Vista, granted, there are some
exceptions, But most software won't be an issue. Kinda pissed me off because
I have been playing the same Myst CD since Win 95. And NO, I still haven't
beaten it (just kidding).

As far as when I expect to buy it, well, I have already pre-ordered it. So
when it is released, I should have it that day, or the next day anyhow.

People are predicting issues, but I don't think there are going to be that
many. I am looking forward to the release.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks everyone for the great advice.. I have another question: Will Office
2007 and other software be optimized for Vista?
Thanks again Barry

Yes, Office 2007 works well with XP as well as Vista. I am running Vista RC2
and Office 2007 B2TR and there are no issues at all. Infact, Office actually
seems to run better on my vista Box than on my XP machine.
