Not normally. Your hard drive contains the operating system that you use to
connect, as well as web browser and email software. Pretty much everything
you do is contained on the hard drive. However.....
What you can do though, is boot the system with a bootable OS disk like a
self-contained Linux system disk. These contain everything you need on an
optical disk (CD/DVD) and do not require that a hard drive be installed.
