Can you see these folders in your Documents?

If you have Vista, can you go open your Documents folder, click on Organize
in the toolbar and select Folder and Search options, View tab, uncheck the
box "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and accept the
confirmation. Now in your Documents folder, can you see transparent folders
called My Music, My Pictures and My Videos in there?

If you can, don't delete them, I think they may be for programs that try to
put music into those folders, and then Vista bounces the files into the
correct folders called Music, Pictures and Videos. Not sure though.

Remember to check that box after you've done the above again.

Hi,

You think correctly. They are redirectors, or more commonly called junction
points, and their job is exactly what you surmise. They are there so that
older applications hard-coded to go to a "My" folder are redirected to the
new locations of the Vista equivalents. They are not folders at all, and are
considered a system file and as such are not removable.

These files are causing me some problems though since the program I
use for backup (WinRAR) sees these junctions and puts up error
messages about them and quits. I hate having to find something else
for back-up because of this. I have tons of rar based back-up sets I
then would have to process.

Hi,

Likely because you don't have access permissions to them. Either configure
your backup program to bypass those (and you shouldn't need to back them up
anyways, as there is nothing in them, they are only junctions), or try
running it as admin.

I'd try a backup like Acronis 10 which is very well worth what it costs you
and will give you a lot of back up options--you can be selective as to what
you back up, and when and how often, and you can easily get a full image.
There are free download trials for some of their products, and it's a
favorite of a lot of regulars on these Vista groups.
