can you hyperlink an index in Word?

In Word the "hyperlink" feature automatically inserts a hyperlink into Table
of Contents (you can turn this feature off) so that TOC entries are
clickable. I have a TOC at the beginning and an index at the end of a
document and would like to have each entry in the index similarly
automatically hyperlinked back to the entry in the document. Can this be done?

The only method I can think of is to create a bookmark on each page and then
on your Index, create a cross reference at each page number, linking you to
the bookmarks.

Anybody else have any easier/quicker ideas?

I'm not aware of any features in current versions of Word offering a
hyperlinked INDEX. :-(

This has been discussed over the years in various forums. The big
difference between a hyperlinked TOC and INDEX is, the target for the
hyperlink is very clear and unique in case of the TOC. For an INDEX, the
target is either not unique or the number of bookmarks may raise
dramatically. The following thread points this out:

IOW, you'd have to code it yourself or use an existing 3rd party
solution. I remember MVP Steve Hudson advertising for his site with the
slogan: "Want a hyperlinked index?"

Nowadays, his site can be found at:
