When I boot up Win XP with SP2 I get and error message that states "gearsec
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this
inconvenience." And of course the ubiquitous message "do you want to send
MS..."

I think my [now Symantec] DriveImage 7 is causing this to occur. Has anyone
else run across this?

DriveImage, iTunes, and a few other programs use that driver for copying
DVD/CDs.

Perhaps you can boot into safe mode and remove the offending program, get XP
up normally, and try reinstalling?

Doesn't seem to be anything about this particular problem that pops up
readily in searching.

Gearssec is used by Drive image 7, I read another post by someone a few days
ago who was having problems with DVD X copy which also uses gearsec.Hopefully
an update will be released for it soon.

Funny thing is - when I removed the exe (gearsec.exe) program I couldn't get
DriveImage to work. I'd dbl-clk it and I'd get an error message and the
program wouldn't run. I did a quick search of the net and found Gearsec's
homepage and downlloaded a newer version of gearsec.exe. I can now boot with
no error message and a test back-up using DriveImage seemed to go ok.

Maybe I'll end up using TrueImage. That seems to get lots of raves.
