can XP home read a FAT hard drive ?

Hi,
I have a problem with and old Win 95 PC - Motherboard problems.
I want to take the hard drive and mount it as a secondary drive in an XP
machine so I can recover the data. Is this possible or will XP destroy the
data by trying to initialise the volume before making it visible ?

Anyone tried this and succeeded ?

yeah I know all about backups but they aren't nearly as convenient as
remounting the disk, especially as the backup media speed is so pitifully
slow.
