A friend has asked me whether he can use PC as an alarm clock/
auto off? He is on xp.

He wants his pc to boot up all by itself at, say, 6 AM and start
playing some song as alarm.

He wants his pc to continue playing some songs while he falls
asleep in the night, and then, the pc should shut down by
itself, say, at 11:30 PM.

Well. People have peculiar expectations.

His logic is simple. His TV can do it, his dec can do it, so why
not his computer?

I am not aware whether it can be done. If anyone knows, please
guide me, even if some utilities are required.

Thanks.

Scheduled tasks and possible hardware (BIOS) settings can do these things.

A couple of scheduled tasks - one to start music playing at night for him,
another to perform a shutdown of the computer and another to play music at
logon (assuming he has it setup for autologon.)

As for the powering on - that would be up to the BIOS capability - and if
that option to auto-power on exists in their system BIOS - which has nothing
to do with Windows at all.

Hello,

The PC can boot-up on its own only if the BIOS supports it. Most new BIOSs have this feature.
Consult the documentations of the motherboard.

Your friend can launch a song by using Windows Task Scheduler and scheduling to play a song (mp3
etc). The default media player will open up and start playing the song.

The PC can also be set to shutdown at a particular time. Try using the shutdown.exe command for this
purpose.
