can Vista show me the PCI slots available on my PC?

S

Steve Richter

I need to know if my PC has a PCIe X1 slot available on the
motherboard. Short of opening up the case and looking, does Vista have
a facility for reporting the expansion slots it detects on the PC and
if they are being used?

thanks,

-Steve

If you go to the manufacturer web site, you will get this info.. failing
that, open up the side and take a look..

That's actually incorrect. Everest Ultimate will. Clicking on Motherboard,
Chipset, then South Bridge will show the information.

Can't always do that Mike. My Acer is a prime example. It's an OEM specific
motherboard from Foxconn if I remember correctly, and as such there is
nothing to be found for it. Everest Ultimate however, WILL show free slots.

Mr. Richter,

Download and run SIW. Depending upon your motherboard you may or may
not get all the information you are seeking.
Have a nice day.

It does, but the trial doesn't...;)

There again, with popping the side off, what if it has one of those stickers
saying you will void the warranty? So just d/l it, run it to find the info,
then uninstall...:)

Since the OP DIDN'T want to open the case, that's why I recommended this.

It will be difficult to install a card into a slot without taking the side
off.. :)

Indeed. But given the way he worded the question maybe he just wanted to
know before he got the card? Dunno. Just going by what he asked...:)

thanks, this helps a lot. I was looking to purchase a TV tuner card
and the one I was looking at needed a PCI-X 1x slot. Even after I
opened up the case to check for it, I was not completely sure ( hard
to see the writing, etc ). A lot easier when I only have to open the
case when I need to install something.
