Can Someone with WIndows MovieMaker Please Repeat My Simple Experiment?

M

Martin

I've observed a strange behavior with my MovieMaker, and I'm trying to
determine if my copy is corrupt (which means I'll have to re-load), or
if maybe I've just found an undocumented bug that's common to all.

Try this:

1. Open MM and put a short video clip on the timeline. Click on the
clip to be sure it is selected.

2. Add a 5- or 10-second title using "tools" "titles and credits" "add
title before the selected clip". The title should appear on the
timeline before the clip, not on the title overlay line.

3. Click on the main clip again, to re-select it. Add another title
using "add title after the selected clip". This title should appear at
the end of the clip, again on the main timeline and not the title
overlay.

You should now have a title, followed by a video clip, followed by
another title, all on the upper timeline.

Now try to use the "take picture from preview" tool to capture JPEGs
from frames in the first title, the main clip, and the ending title.

In my MovieMaker, I can capture JPEGs from the main clip and the ending
title, but not from the beginning title. How about you?

On my machine the Take Picture button
is only live when video is playing.

I guess I would ask why you would even
want a screen shot of your titles?

on my system, I can take snapshots of titles on either the video track or
title overlay track, and the feature is fully functional for any and all
titles, even the first one.

Mine only works on source files...
not Titles and Credits.

Are you running WinXP SP2?

Wow, this is really interesting - different results from different
users of MM.

For the record, mine does not require the video to be playing in order
to capture. I can just manually drag the timescale pointer to the
correct spot and capture. But not from a title that happens to be at
the beginning of the project.

My reason for snagging a title frame was that I wanted to start my
soundtrack substantially before the title actually faded in. It would
have been very convenient to snag a JPEG of the title's first (black)
frame, insert it at the beginning, then stretch it to the desired delay
time. Instead, I had to go get a black frame from somewhere else. Not
a big problem, but that's what alerted me to this odd behavior.

Although moviemaker lets you "delay" your soundtrack by dragging it
anywhere on it's timeline, you don't have that option with the video.
It must start at time 00:00, without any intro gap. Unless that's just
another anomaly of my particular copy.

Maybe the MCE version of Movie
Maker somewhat different.

as a side note: if you do very much of this, open paint (or any other photo
editing software), and make yourself a plain black photo, and a plain white
photo. keep them in your collection, you'll use them almost every project.
