You want a CD-R disk. But... you can't buy a disk that prevents you from
writing over a previous file. You just have to be careful not to do that
unless you want to. A file on a CD-R disk can't be removed but if you place
another file with the same name on the disk it will not remove the first
file but your computer will only "see" the new file. You can't regain space
used by files that are replaced by another same named file. The only way
you can protect the files on a CD-R from being overwritten is to finalize
the disk which prevents any further writing to that disk.
Lets say you have a large 1MB file named good.doc. You put it on a CD-R.
The next day you modify/edit the original file on your hard drive. Then you
place it on your CD-R. You will only "see" the new version of that good.doc
file when you use the CD-R but the first file version is still using up
space because it's not a CD-RW (re-writable) disk. If you did this about
700 times you would have used all the available space on your CD-R disk but
you still would only see the latest 1MB copy of good.doc. The 699 old
versions are still there but are not referenced for viewing. Perhaps with
3rd party software you could view the older versions but that is beyond this
discussion.
Someone discussed a CD+R disk but I've never seen one. AFAIK for CDs there
are only CD-R (which is a recordable disk that can't be re-used) and CD-RW
(which is a recordable disk on which data can be removed and that space
re-used).
The +R listing (I think) only refers to DVDs. There are DVD-R and DVD+R
disks as well as RAM and other types. We even now have doublesided DVDs and
Blu-Ray and......
