Many thanks but I still faced the problem. When I try to install say audio, a
message appears saying that 'The original driver is in the C:\hp\driver\audio
and asked to install thru the Device Manager.

In the Device Manager -under "Other Device"- ? PCI device
but there is no other pci device installed part from graphic card that came
with the pc

fyi, this is how I installed the win xp, I attached the new hdd (sata1) and
after the installation I attached back the old hdd (sata3). The old hdd disk
retained its partition as C and D and the new hdd was assigned as H

When I trry to play the windows media player, it says it cannot play the
file. According to the sticker at the side of the pc the audio -Intel High
Definition 7.1 Audio, Dolby, Digital Surround sound ready

How can I install the audio driver? Please help and thanks for your time

The "original driver" should be "in the" D:\hp\driver\audio folder since
you slaved the original hdd, not in the C:\hp\driver\audio folder.

When I right click to open either C or D it shows > hp>patches folder,
desktop.ini, folder.htt, protected.ed and warming.bmp
In the patch folder, these are 51WW1IVI, 51WW1LIG, 51WW1WHQ ,51WW7PCA,
env_var.ini, PATCH.CMD
When I double click say 51WWW7PCA file it shows a MS Dos bat.file

What shall I do next, thanks

The audio chip may be recording itself as a PCI device (even though it is on the motherboard).
I just repaired a Dell that had an unknown PCI device that turned out to be the on-board audio chip.
Installing the audio driver took care of that PCI device.

As Elmo said, if you have the old C drive as a slave now, the drivers will be on
"D:\hp\driver\audio"
Direct your driver update search to that location.

Maybe the PCI device isn't audio.. try some other drivers in the HP
folder, other subfolders. Did you try the HP CD install? Since
everything is stored on the slave drive, a destructive install on C:,
where a format is followed by a new install might actually get all your
drivers installed correctly.

Many thanks for all your time and effort. Will check with HP but in meantime
I am very curious to know why the new hdd shows as "H' partition (when 2 hdd
attached). Shouldn't it just show 'C' since it is the only hdd present during
installation from an XP cd (Hp did not come with any cd as in Recovery
partition). Any comments please, thanks
