can someone help me?

A couple of days ago I lost a couple of files on my
computer,they were all in one particular directory.
Today the same happened,I put new stuff in that same
directory and it's gone again.
Worse this time though since the whole directory is gone
aswell as my documents folder and a directory I called
burns in which I had some stuff I wanted to burn on a cd.
When I look with command prompt for the contents on one of
my hard disks,the one all this stuff happened on it
reports the missing directorys by using a single dot or 2
dots.
Funny thing the available space on that hard disk hasn't
changed and I can't find the lost directorys and contents
back in the recycle bin.
Sooo I really hope someone can clear me out on
this....hacker,or did something else happened?
I don't know if this is important but when I started my
computer today it did a scandisk on that particular hard
disk.
Anyway all ideas welcome,I would love to get especially
the contents of the my documents folder back but I quess
the lesson in this is back-up back-up hm?

something more?

I tried everything you said as in hidden files,when was it
last
modified etc.
No results.

I have 3 hard disks in my comp. the third is divided into
2
partitions,the directory that was empty a couple of days
ago is on the second
partition.
Now it is completely gone and its new content aswell as my
documents
and its content and the so called burns directory,all were
on the second
partition.

Between words,I turn of my comp. normally,start -

shutdown....you know.

I thought myself it was a hacker,because that burns dir.
was mainly
filled with music and that dir. that was empty allready a
couple of days ago
was filled with movies,that I had
replaced and now the complete folder and new stuff is gone.
The my documents folder contained alot of photos that I
had taken
(amateur photographer).

Another thing,don't know if it's related but I all of a
sudden have
weird filenames as 5 smileyface A smileyface L that I
can't remove or
A[]Çimé or a file like butterfly.jpg is now suddenly
butt~1.jpg,only on
those 2 partitions that I divided the third hard disk in.
