Can Ping a computer on the network, but can't Ping by Computer Name

S

SQLNow

I am having a problem with DNS or WINS, in that in that I can ping the IP
address but can't ping the computer by name.

I have tried:
netsh winsock reset catalog

Rebooted and nothing. Same problem, it won't see the computer by name.

How do I regenerate the DNS or WINS on a peer to peer Network on Windows XP

I can get out to the internet just any www name. My ISP DNS works fine.
The problem is when I try to access another internal machine. It has
something to do with this specific machine, because on other machines I can
see or browse by the computer name.

My virus protection cropped up with a virus in a file which it quarantined.
I read somewhere on the net that sometimes spyware and a possible virus will
corrupt the Winsock entries in the registry.

Is there some utility that will remove and reset the registry and restore
Winsock programs and settings back to normal?

Thanks

You have a name resolution issue. In addition to the possibility of LSP /
Winsock corruption, you need to check for two other possible causes.
Check misconfigured / overlooked firewalls.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html>
Check registry setting restrictanonymous.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/restrictanonymous-and-your-server.html>

In addition, the LSP / Winsock issue may be resolved by any one of five
solutions, and none of the solutions (including your tried "netsh" run) has
proved to be self sufficient. Check the other four, described in this article:

Few peer-peer networks have a DNS server for internal name resolution, which
makes DNS unlikely. But show us "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can
make sure.

Workgroup name is irrelevant to name resolution, that only affects contents of
Network Neighborhood.
