Can open a worksheet but cannot edit or save

I can open an existing worksheet that I used countless times before but I cannot edit it or save it in exce
I can email it someone and they can open it , edit it, etc. This is happening in Word also. Using Windows XP.
Can you help or offer advice

Here is something to try:

Try shutting down all your applications, then deleting all the files in your
Temp directory.

then reboot.
