Hi,

I posted to this site before and followed the
recomendations to run ad aware, spybot, cwshredder,
hijackthis etc. I posted my hijackthis log on several
forums but have yet to get any responses in about 4 days.
I can not access any web based email -- page can not be
displayed is returned. Also can not run Windows Update --
it returns an error has occurred. Also, can not post to
any newsgroups including this one --page can not be
diplayed is returned (I am using a different computer
right now.) I can however access other secure sites. I
have run spybot and ad aware and CwShredder (along with
various other system cleaning tools.) I have used trend
micro, panda and several other virus scans -- they all
come up saying no infection. I did however find xi.exe and
explored.exe in Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Shared
Documents. I searched for viruses that use these files.
Tried all the auto fixes for it but they all say I'm not
infected. I tried the manual fixes and none of the
problems exist in the registry. Ready to pull my hair out.

If anyone has ANY other suggestions it would be greatly
appreciated.

If anyone does feel motivated to help you, and wants to examine your previous
requests for help, how do you suggest we identify those requests?

You, and thousands others like you, post as
"(e-mail address removed)". You provide no further identification.

Can you provide links to your HijackThis log postings, for instance?

Cheers,
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for your reply. I apologise for not including the
user info -- I'm not really that familiar with proper
etiquette/protocol for these groups.
Following is my hijackthis log. If there is other info I
can provide, please let me know. Didn't mean to be vague --
just freaking out cuz i'm at a loss.

Thanks!

Stephen,

Don't sweat the small stuff. There are dozens of ways to post to Usenet - and
everybody has a different opinion about something.

I do wish, though, that you hadn't used your email address in the previous post
- that's a perfect way to get email you don't want. Learn to munge your email
address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer when posting to open forums.
Protect yourself and the rest of the internet - never post your address
unmunged.
http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_munging.htm

What forums did you post your HJT log? And under what name? A direct URL link
to your posts would be most helpful.

Another thought that you should check out. Search your entire system drive,
including hidden and system folders, for file "hosts". There is one legit copy,
in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\. The others are bogus, and part (but just
part) of the problem. Also, examine the contents of the legit copy, using
Notepad, too.

Anyway, on with the analysis.

I don't see anything that explicitly is known to cause problems with browsing -
like a known browser or dns hijacker. But there is a lot of stuff you need to
get rid of. Or probably can get rid of, with no problem.

Kazaa, as with many P2P applications, is arguably something to remove. Whether
it's causing your problem is questionable.

You'll need to close all applications, start HijackThis, and tick the following
for HJT to remove. After HJT finishes, reboot. Then rerun HJT, and post a new
log.

Do a web search on this - seen by many as spyware related, and not needed with
P2P apps like Kazaa (which you don't need anyway)

see -- I knew I'd screw something up.
oo well..at least we can't get to that email address
anyway. ;)
I'm actually working on this for my boyfriend's computer
which makes it worse cuz I don't know what he's
accessed/downloaded before the problem occurred.

anyway, here's a link to the forum where my new log is
posted. I removed what you recommended. I also checked the
hosts files and all seems good.

Thanks for the assist!

Click on that link and a window would come up to ask you
to SAVE or OPEN, click on OPEN and you would see another
window and at the bottom right hand side you would see a
space that says MTU..you have to put 1492, then on the
left side of that where it says adapter settings make you
have the correct adapter selected, then clink on save and
then exit and reboot your PC and tried one more time to
access your hotmail and yahoo account and let us know..
