I wanted to create a new database or open one I made at
the office in Access 2002, an error popped up. Workgroup
Administrator couldn't create the workgroup information
file. Make sure that you have specified a valid path and
file name, that you have adequate permissions to create
the file, and that you have enough disk space on the
destination disk. (-3100). So I tried manually creating
the system.mdw in Access. But the file was still unable
to be created. I tried the Access Workgroup Administrator
program by join and create a new one. It will not save
it. I repaired the program, deleted all temp directory
and any old files, reinstall the program four times .Word,
PowerPoint and Excel is running perfectly. Everything
seems fine when I done the installation. Also I tried
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 282357. ACC2002: ERROR
MESSAGES WHEN YOU CONVERT WORKGROUP INFORMATION (.MDW)
FILE TO ACCESS 2002.

Thank you
Rick

You don't mention the version of windows, but does this happen when you log
on as an administrator?

It could be a permissions problem on the folder where it's trying to create
the workgroup file.

I do not log on to my computer.. No password, no log on.
What can I do, to solve this problem. Do I have to
reformat?

The version of windows is xp. I have office xp pro.and
installed SP4.

Tried Detect and Repair in the Help menu. Also tried
Create and join and did not work. I done a search on my
computer and it came back not found.

Are you able to create a file in the folder:
c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Access

The Search results came back with C:\Documents and
Settings\HOME USER\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\. If
I create a file, I can not find the folder. Also, In
Explore, it does not show! I have C:\Documents and
Settings\ALL USER and I have C:\Documents and
Settings\HOME USER and in my HOME USER I have COOKIES,
DESKTOP, FAVORITES, MY DOCUMENTS, START MENU, USERDATA AND
WINDOWS. If I try to make a folder called C:\Documents
and Settings\HOME USER\Application Data\. It comes back
and says: A file with the name you specified already
exists. Specify a different file name. Please help!

it's because it's a hidden folder
open explorer/tools/folder options/view & change "hidden files and folders"
to "show hidden files and folders"
(you can access it by typing the path in though without unhiding)
tip try:
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data in the address bar of explorer (or start/run)

I made a file and saved it in C:\Documents and
Settings\HOME USER\Application
Data\Microsoft\Access\test.doc

Yes, I download and install, Office XP Service Pack 3
(SP3) (58925 KB) with Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 (SP8) for
Windows XP.

After join the workgroup a message comes back and says:
You have successfully joined the workgroup. I go into the
C:\Documents and Settings\HOME USER\Application
Data\Microsoft\Access\ and I have two files: one I made
called test.doc and other one called ACWZUSR "Microsoft
Access Add-in Data. No file called system.mdw.

OK, so you've made progress. You now get a message indicating the
successfully joined workgroup.

Use Start, Search, Files and Folders, and locate all *.mdw files on the
computer to locate it.

I searched both hard drives "There were no file found" "
Do you want to quit searching"

I don't know what else to suggest. You may want to start a new thread and
see if someone else has ideas.

The place where I work has XP windows with office 2000. I
have office 2002 Can I copy that file to a disk and put it
in the directory?

I copy that file to the directory. Now I have a new
error: Cannot open the Microsoft Jet engine workgroup
information file. (Error 3358)
You attempted to perform a security-related task, but the
workgroup information file (typically System.mdw) required
for the task cannot be found. idea please

When you right-click on the folder and choose properties, what do you see in
the security tab?

Also, try putting the mdw file in
winnt\system32 folder (or windows\system32)

The folder is a read-only and putting the system.mdw in
windows\system32 did not help! Thank you for your help.
But I think I am at the end of the line.

The folder being read-only *is the problem*. You must have full permission
to that folder.
