can not do full back-up

I'm using win2k pro. I want to do a full back-up of my C:
hard drive (9 Gig), using windows Back-up, to a 30 Gig D:
hard drive. About half way through I get a
message "Insert media: The fixed media is full Etc.".
There is plenty of room left on the D: drive. How do I
get back-up to recognize all the free space.

If D: is FAT32, the file size is limited to about 4GB.
Convert D: to NTFS.

Open a CMD prompt and type:
convert D: /FS:NTFS
