Can not copy *.exe objects from XP Pro system on a network

Guest

I have two environments that act similar.

Network 1 has XP Home system conected to XP Pro system via a wired Linksys
router.

Network 2 has 2 XP Pro systems connected to a XP Pro system via a wireless
D-Link router.

All systems are at SP2 level and are up to date with all fixes.

I have specified shared printers and folders in both systems and have have
specified share for a few folders in both systems. Shared printers are
working OK.

Network 1.

I can copy non exe extention objects from the XP Pro system to the XP Home
system performing the copy from either system.

I can copy *.exe extention objects from the XP Pro system to the XP Home
system performing the copy from the XP Pro system.

I can not copy exe extention objects from the XP Pro system to the XP Home
system if I perform the copy from the XP Home system.

I have looked at the permissions for the folders I want to share and can
find no specific reference to *.exe objects.

Again, non exe extention objects can be copied without any problem.

Network 2.

All system in network 2 are XP Pro systems.

I can copy non exe extention objects between all system from any system
without any problems.

I can not copy exe extention objects between any of the XP Pro systems. I
have tried performing the copy on each of the systems with no luck.

Does anybody know what the problem is with exe extention objects. I believe
I had this working awhile ago but can't remember when.

Stu,

What you're talking about sounds like a new security restriction, where you are
being prevented from moving *.exe files around. I noticed this behaviour with
Windows Messenger, where I ended up having my friends rename and zip up files in
some cases, since I couldn't access *.cmd, *.exe, and other files copied onto my
computer from a WM file transfer.

What security programs (firewalls, antivirus products, etc) do you have (had) on
your computers? Did you check the ACLs for both the distant and local folders?
And, maybe inherited permissions, so check all parent folders?

Chuck,

Thanks for your reply.

I have Norton's Internet Security 2006 installed. Even when I turn the
firewall off, I have the same problem. I also had Norton's Firewall 2004
installed up to a month ago with the same problem. Also, Windows firewall is
also turned off.

The ACLs are full control.

I can copy the exe file to the same folder and rename the copy with an
extention of OLD. I can then go to my XP Home system and copy this object.
I can rename the copied object back to .EXE and then execute it. This
procedure works fine.

I just can't understand why the EXE extention will not copy. At least I
have a work around as I don't do this very often.

How are you trying to copy the *.exe files that won't copy? What
commands or icons are you using?

What happens when you do it? What exactly does the error message say?

Stu,

I'm thinking of two scenarios.

One is what I thought when I first saw your complaint. And I'm not convinced
yet it isn't relevant.

The second is copying permissions. When you copy in Windows XP, you copy the
ACLs that apply to the source, which then become part of the object. Are you
copying from the source, or to the source? Have you checked the ACLs before and
after? Have you checked the ACLs in the parent folders too?

Chuck,

I am performing the copy from the XP Home computer. I am copying from the
source folder on the XP Pro system to a folder on the XP Home system.

I have check the permissions before and after the attempted copy. They
remain the same. The source folder was created as a folder under the C:
parent. The C: disk has the same permissions, Full, as the subfolder.

Steve,

I am using the Edit copy command on the source folder, XP Pro system. I am
using the Edit paste command on the destination folder, XP Home system. The
copy is being performed from the XP Home system.

The error message is:
"Cannot copy "filename" Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not
currently in use"

If I perform the same type of copy from the XP Pro system, the file can be
copied.

Again, the only objects I cannot copy when performing the copy on the XP
Home system are *.exe objects.
