can I use IIS on winXP as a web server?

I have been using IIS with frontpage to create web sites, but I would also
like to have a small web server so that I can send my IP address to friends
throu the internet and they could view the files and web pages on the
server. This would be only for a limited use. Is this possible with IIS and
how?

thanks

WindowsXP home edition does not support IIS.

Try XP Pro.

I know that, and I am using XP pro, I just do not know how to configure it
to work like a web server on the internet!
It can be done somehow, since I have read that the limit oc concurrent users
is 10.
But I need to know how. When I log on to my IP adress I get a username and
password window, what do I type in there?
I am a novice at web server stuff....

You can setup IIS if you have Windows XP Pro. IIS might not be
installed by default, so to install IIS go to:

Control Panel > Add or Remove programs > Add or Remove Windows
Components > check Internet Information Services (IIS)

If you have only Windows XP Home edition, don't worry. You can
download a free webserver from Apache.org.

If your have dynamic IP address, you might want to download a program
to map a domain name to your ip address. Try one of these free
program:
www.dynu.com
www.no-ip.com

Take care,
H.

I have XPpro, I do have a dynamic IP address but that does not matter at the
moment.
Can you tell me what I have to do to access the IIS web server from another
computer using a browser?
I have tried just inputing my IP address, but then a small window pops up
asking me for a username and password.
What do I do there?
All the settings are at default because I have not done anything to change
them.
I am new to all this, can you help me out?

Thanks

Kenny

Did you try use http://yourcomputename
if you use \\yourcomputername, yes you will get a prompt for a user
name/pwd.

One thing is make sure your webserver is started. With your default
setting, you should be able to see a default webpage.

I think u need to first allow Anonymous Acces from IIS.
And then you need to set up the Security to let "Everyone" or whatever the
"IIS User Acount" reads the files in the folder where you put your web page
files from your hard disk.

So...

1) tell IIS to let anyone on the web to see your computer
2) tell your computer to let anyone to see your hard disk.

Adam, I've told you before, lose the HTML. Posts here should be plain text
only. This is in your best interests - many servers will strip non-plain
text posts from places they don't belong (like 99% of Usenet).

Hello,

I solved the problem, I created a new index page in the main directory. Then
that page was accessible to everyone while the default one was not.
I also used NO-IP to get a new web address instead of using my ip address
each time.
So everything is working fine now.

For people seearching in the google groups:

All you have to do is create an index page in the main web folder, then type
your current IP address
in internet explorer.

Thanks to everyone for their replies

But you didn't say that. A piece of pertinent info, don't you think, as so
many try to use it with XP Home!
