Can I shift my C; drive to a new HD

Gordon Abbot

With windows 95se I was able to copy my old HD C: partition to a new,
larger HD by using the Western Digital copy utility (copy partition).
Had no trouble with windows booting up on the new HD.

I just purchased a new HD and want to transfer my C: partition which has
the operating system (win xp sp2) and my files.

I also want to change the partition size (make it larger) before I copy
everything to the C: partition.

Can this be done with XP? Just a straight copy from the old drive to the
new one with different partition sizes and the operating system will
work (like 98se did). I realize there will probably be a request for
re-activation, but that has gone smoothly in the past on line when I
first installed xp.

What is the best way, if there is one, to do this?

I did a search and there was conflicting info so decided to come back
here where the advice has been excellent. You all got me through my
shift, a year ago, to XP from 98se.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Gordon,

No reason you can't do the same thing, copying using the utility provided
with the drive. it should allow for you to change the volume size as well.

You do it just like you didi with W98, use the software provided by the disk
manufacturer (on a diskette or download from net)
I don't know if they have the ability to dynamically change the partition
sizes.
That is what 3rd party progs are for, like PartitionMagic and such..

You sure danced around what you used to copy with originally. Nice touch.
Some may even mention the version of such copy software...

Sorry, I thought it was clear that I used the Western Digital software
that came with the drive. The programs are also available on the website.

Use the most current software available from the WD site, if there is no
copy option to make use of the entire hard drive or make a larger partition,
think you'll have your answer. Believe such software either makes the
partition size identical or uses the entire hard drive as one partition
copy. Check first.
