Hi everyone. I am considering purchasing three computers to setup at my home
office, all running Windows XP. I was wondering if I can set one of the
computers up as a server with applications on it that the other two Windows
XP computer can access?

Let's say that I want all three computers to access my appointment
scheduler, how do I configure it so that computers 2 and 3 can use the
appointment scheduler program on computer one? Thank you in advance.

It's hard to say without knowing what your appointment scheduler is, however,
unless it is made to run on a network, it is unlikely that it would work.
Later versions of Microsoft Office do contain apps which will let you share
your tasks and appointments with other users, but it seems like that isn't
what you are asking. When you are sharing applications on a network,
ordinarily you will have the app installed at each workstation, and they will
all share a common database. Hope this helps.

XP Pro has remote desk top sharing feature..see

I plan on trying it out to see how some apps like quicken work for an
office environment. Anybody have experiences with it?

Yep. You can even buy the server prog from MS. You may wish to look at
simply running an application from another machine though, depending on what
you do. For example, one of my tax agent clients with 3 machines on a
network in different rooms doesnt need a server program because the main
program used at that agency by 4 different people at odd times of the day
actually was designed to work from a remote station on a network WITHOUT the
need to be a server based application. If you get the machinery and check
that out, first, you may be able to save yourself some money. If it turns
out that you cant do that with your programs, then you need the server prog.

Well, you can use a server prog and you can also use a prog like VNC or PC
Anywhere to take control of the remote computer and run the progs as if you
are sitting at the keyboard.

Yep. Used it over internet and over my local network and it seems to run OK.
The only real problem is that you have to have someone at the machine you
are about to control actually allow it to be taken over. In short, I don't
think it is at the point - maybe not ever designed to do it anyway - where
PC Anywhere and VNC are.
