Can I safely delete all .tmp files from my hard drive?

A few large word docs seem to be crashing and create a lot of .tmp files
which is slowing down the word application. If I do a seach from the "Start"
menu for files and folders with .tmp files I get a huge list of about 700
plus .tmp files. Is it okay to delete them?

As a general rule of thumb, any temporary file older than a day is
garbage. Windows will lock the files that it's using so you can't
delete them. Anything under %WINDIR%\TEMP and %USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\Temp is fair game for deletion. Also search your hard drive
for files ending in *.TMP, *.GID, *.BAK, *.OLD, etc.
