can retrieve them?

A lot depends on how much activity there has been
on the drive since. There is a program called FileRestore
you can get from www.winternals.com. I would suggest
you do your research and downloading from another
computer because every disk write on your damaged
one eliminates more and more info.

Did you format? If you did, they are gone forever.

Not necessarily. There are data recovery services that use
sophisticated technology which can often retrive data after
reformatting and reinstalling. if the data is important enough,
one of these services can be tried. However, note that this is
*very* expensive and it's not guaranteed to work; nobody will
want to try this unless the lost data is very important.

Hi,

Anything that is written over by the new installation of Windows XP is lost
forever. Anything that was not written over is potentially recoverable. Go
to www.RecoverMyFiles.com and download their trial program. Run this over
you disk and you will get to see what can be recovered. I suggest if you
have formatted your drive you run the "format recover" option.

Good luck.
