can I remove SP1 after installing SP2?

My machine is running out of memory, and I need to open some space. I had
opened some space with difficulties and after windows updater installed SP2,
I realized I have lost all the spaces I had opened. Can I remove SP1 after
I have SP2?
Does anyone know how much space I may gain after removing SP1?

Hard drive space is hard drive space, *not* memory. Memory is RAM. And
there's no excuse these days for running out of space when a 160GB P-ATA
drive can be had for around £75. Space is cheap, if you're running out, buy
a bigger drive.

SP1 is totally replaced by SP2. But there will be quite a lot of
material put there by the SP2 install which you can tidy up - see the
section on that at Installing SP2:

Wow,I seem to have about a gig's worth of space being used by these
$NTUninstallxxxxxxxxxxx$ and $NTServicePackUninstall$ type folders (about 10
or so all total). Since my machine seems to be working well (now with SP2) am
I really able to remove all these folders? Sure would open up some needed
space. And, despite the comments about cheap drives, there is the hassle
factor to consider. Big drives are cheap but I have a dual-boot system with
tons of registered software (XP for general use, Win2000 for pro audio
recording) and it would be a major pain to 'just get a bigger drive'! I would
be working for weeks or months to move all this to a new drive when in fact
the drives I have are fine if they are just cleaned up. Can't believe there
is so much stuff left behind during these updates, etc. There should be a
nice program that would do a thorough cleaning for us!!!
 
Put the space to use and delete the files since all is working OK and
there is no foreseeable reason to save the files.

You can remove these folders but if anything with SP2 goes bad after
deleting you will not be able to go back to SP1. I'd keep them for a couple
months until I get rid of them. But that's me. If you absolutely need more
space then read more replies to your message.

I'm not exactly desperate for space but would like to regain some more free
space at some point. Would it be safe to at least delete the downloads
mentioned in these articles? I would hate to do something rash and then have
an even bigger problem later. Or I guess I could save these to CDs or
something and then hope to remember where the are if ever needed. Would I get
an error message or something if these files are needed? The system is set to
do critical updates automatically so that worries me a bit too.
