I just bought a new PC with vista and Windows Mail. I used to use outlook to
recieve my mails. Therefore, I copy my outlook mail folder (pst file) to my
new PC and try to open my saved mails in window mail. However, when i tried
to inport my outmail to my windows mail, an error message has shown saying
that it can not inport outlook mail from MAPI.

Can anyone tell me how can I open my outlook mails in Windows Mail?

Windows Mail needs to have Outlook installed in order to import from a PST
file.

On the old machine import the messages into Outlook Express and then see
here:

I have the same problem. I get same error.
I converted all my machines into VISTA and can no longer open my Outlook
messages.
I was mislead by the fact that in the Windows Mail there is a menu item
'Import Messages from Outlook' hence I expected it to work.
Now, I really do not know what to do to be able to read my archived mails.

If you're talking about Outlook and not Outlook Express, then you
talking about the MAPI issue, which means Outlook must be installed on
the machine so that WM can import Outlook emails into Vista.

Yes, I am talking about Oulook.

Experiencing same issue here. Do I understand correctly that I need to first
install Outlook (not Outlook Express, and the Outlook can be either from my
old Outlook 2003 install disk or download an Outlook 2007 trial) onto the
VISTA machine, then Windows Mail will recognize a pst file to import mail
from Outlook? Does that apply to other Outlook items such as importing
contacts and calendar into comparable programs under VISTA?

Right.
For Windows Contacts first export from Outlook as a CSV file.
I have no idea about Windows Calendar.

An Office 2007 trial was my first installation on Vista, but upon trying
Windows Mail even I am receiving this error when trying to import from
Outlook 2007. I have tried reinstalling Outlook four times. I should learn
when to give up. Perhaps I repeatedly ran into brick walls as a child.

I did not want to go through installing and uninstalling outlook on the Vista
computer, so I never really found out myself if that would work. I took the
way out by importing the old email messages on the old computer into outlook
express, and then import from the outlook ost file into Vista windows mail.
That went without any problem. The contact list in outlook is a whole other
issue. I ended up having to first export from to csv from outlook then
import into Windows address book. I was not able to map all the fields
proper, and had to do a manual clean up job. The calendar is yet another
matter. I found a link for download of a free utility that converts the
outlook calendar into ics format which can then be imported into Vista
calendar, and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately I forgot what it is, and
has already gotten rid of the old computer where that utility was installed.
I found it in one of the questions and answers under the category of Windows
Vista General discussion. I would think it is still there. Go search for
it. I also surf the web and found a bunch of utilities for sale that seem to
claim to convert all outlook components. Don't fell like advertising. If
interested, go surf and I am sure you can find them easily.

I literally never used the contact list or calendar features, anyway, so that
is not a concern of mine. I only want to import messages.

I don't have another system available to import them to. I have two PSTs.
The Outlook 2007 trial is using them just fine, but I don't want to purchase
Outlook because it is far beyond my needs and I am already running a
purchased and activated Office 2007 Home and Student.

Ultimately, I need Windows Mail to cooperate with the Outlook 2007 trial.
Since it is the #1 solution being given to just about everyone, it must work
for some people. From what I have read, the MAPI error should only occur if
Outlook is not installed, so I can only assume that Windows Mail is somehow
not able to interact with Outlook, and I don't know what could be causing
this.

I am guessing you are upgrading your computer from some older versions of
Windows (2000, xp, etc.) to Vista. If that is the case, you should have
Outlook Express, that is if you have not already blown that away and can
still start Outlook Express. If so, then run Outlook Express to import
messages from Outlook. Vista Windows Mail can then import from the Outlook
Express dbx files. If you absolutely have to make Windows Mail to read and
import from Outlook pst files, hope someone else reading this email thread
can give you some help. Good luck.

I don't have Outlook Express.

Thanks for all the good info on this thread- question on the process- I have
imported my messages from outlook into OE- on my old pc and will be
transferring the dbx file(s) to my new vista pc (via belkin "easy transfer
cable for windows vista"). I want to be able to find the dbx files just
created when I do the transfer process. I have tried to locate the dbx
file(s) just created by that process on explorer, (using the basic windows
"search") and have found 60 dbx files which I am sure are not just from this
import process I just did- most of them show a date of 10-4-2002, not today's
date. When I begin the transfer process to the new pc, where do I look in the
old pc for the dbx files I just created?
Thanks for our help.

Thank you for all this info, I read this before I tried transferring from
Outlook to Vista Mail. One option for transferring Contacts is to export to
a .csv file and then import them into Vista mail. You can't map all the
fields, but it was much better than manually typing in everything.

Has anyone found an easier way to import Outlook info in Vista Mail.
