Can I lock rows together so they sort as one row or "group"?

I want to be able to "lock" a number of rows together so that the
behave as one row (being sorted according to the data in the top lef
column) when the sort function is used - is this possible? If so, ho
is it done? The grouping function for rows does not work when sorting
the rows still get separated.

I am using Microsoft Excel 2000

Thank you

question was about locking rows or grouping and sorting.

This appears to be working for me, but I confess I am not sure why.

Group rows that you want to keep together, but make sure the first tw
rows are grouped together and that the entry in the column that yo
will use as the sort key ensures that it will stay first. (ie i
sorting by name, make the first row AAAAA in the name column)

Then do the Data\sort.

Excel will sort groups/outlines using the sort key and grouped row
will stay together, sorted by the tier I row (top in hierarchy).

Reason the first row must stay is that I think if the first row in th
data sort (assuming top down sorting) must be a grouped row. Thi
convinces Excel it is sorting an outline.

Test it and let me know if it works
