Can I limit the maximum window width for an application?

I have a spiffy new laptop with a nice wide screen. However, some programs
look awful and/or are awkward to use when they are maximized to the full
screen width.

Is there a hack that I can use to limit the maximum width of an application
window?

I need to do this on an application by application basis, since I want to
continue to use the full screen width for some programs (e.g. Excel, watching
DVDs), while creating different maximum screen widths for others.

Thanks for your help.

For the application windows that you do not want in full screen mode, select
the Restore Down button (in between the minimise and close buttons in the
top right hand corner of the window), then stretch and move the window to
the size and position on the screen how you want to use it. Once done, click
on the close icon while holding the Shift key down. Next time you open the
window, it should appear in the position with the size you stipulated. Bear
in mind, however, that sometimes Windows gets its knickers in a twist and
reset these properties, so you may have to repeat the process for a
particular application once in a while.

Hope this helps.

Open the application, size the window as desired, close the application.
Application will re-open in that window size next time, and continue to
do so until you change it.

Close, but no cigar!

I know about this option but this sizes and positions the
intermediate/variable sized window; the one you get when you get when you
hit the reduce (middle box) button.. What I want to adjust is the MAXIMUM
size; the one you get when you hit the maximize (square box) button.

Any way to set the size for the MAXIMUM button?
