can I lighten background page numbers

In Page Break Preview, I want to keep the background page numbers to help
others follow a table of contents, but they're too dark to read through. Is
there any way to lighten them?
 
No.

Maybe, instead of PB preview, insert numbers on the sheet using Wordart.

Set the color to "no color" and the line color to 80% grey. Size for
viewability.
